A Guard Dog is a Great Idea For Home Security, But Which One is the Safest?
aWhen it comes to home security, it does not get any better than owning a dog. Sure, home alarm systems provide great protection, securing the home when everyone is asleep and notifying the police of an infiltration, but a guard dog just adds more of a personal level to it.
Not only are they loyal, they are a part of the family. If raised right, they will protect the home from any intruder, warn you of any suspicious activity and cuddle up and lick your face whenever they want attention. How many home security systems can do that?
Yet, choosing a guard dog can sometimes be a tricky task. With constant reports in the news of guard dogs turning on their owners or attacking friends and family, there is always a hesitance when purchasing one. With the right research, however, purchasing a guard dog can be just as simple and worry free as buying any type of dog.
To start, there are typically three types of guard dogs: watchdogs, guard dogs and attack dogs. Watchdogs are breeds that bark if someone is near or if suspicious activity is occurring near the home. They are more like home alarms, warning homeowners of possible intruders. There sizes, however, vary from the really small to the really large. For example, a Chihuahua can be considered as a watchdog.
Attack dogs are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. They are bred for one simple task: attacking. Traditionally, they guard warehouses or dumps and patrol areas for any burglars or criminals. Police actually use attack dogs in some instances to cease and detain fleeing suspects. Dogs that have the tendency of turning on their owners – due to a number of different causes – are usually in this category.
Guard dogs are basically the middle ground. Most of them are in the mid-range to large size and are bred to guard and defend. They bark if intruders are near and if there is an actual threat, they will defend their owner or the home. With regards to family friendly breeds, there is a wide selection to choose from.
The most notable and common family guard dog breeds are Bullmastiffs, Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Not only are they seen more than other guard dogs, but also they are very loving and loyal to their families. Other interesting breeds are Kuvaszs, Pulis, Doberman Pinschers and Komondors. Dobermans, however, are known to be the more aggressive out of all of them. Regardless of whichever breed you select, almost all of them are very smart and have histories with either herding sheep, hunting or protecting property. And of course, they are all good with kids, too.
With all guard dog breeds, it is important to raise them in a loving way while at the same time making it perfectly clear that you are the leader. Socializing them at a young age with other people is also a necessity. That way, the dog will act as a key asset to home security while at the same time acting as just another member of the family. Besides, how cool is it to put up that “beware of dog” sign on your property? It just makes you all warm and tingly inside.
