A Guard Dog Supplements an Electronic Home Security System

There are advantages and disadvantages of using a trained dog to help protect you premises, but by no means it is a failsafe method of ensuring your family and/or property is protected from unwanted intrusion, tampering and theft.

Guard dogs are potentially dangerous so they require controlled aggression training that allows you to be in command of them even while they are exhibiting strong territorial behavior. Experts say that dogs with the best propensity for this are animals that have a strong self-preservation instinct such as German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Chow Chows and Bull Mastiffs. These dogs also have a deep, loud bark that discourages intruders.

Guard dogs represent a wild card for prowlers because they will either alert the security guards or people on the premises of a potential threat or they will attack. They also make excellent companions when you are away from home and you or your family would like to have the security of being protected while you are out. The training for your watch dog will have the best results when the animal is 6 to 12 months old.

There are some disadvantages to relying on a guard dog. To begin, they are trained to be attack and you have the responsibility if an innocent person inadvertently gets hurt. You must forewarn people coming to your home that you have a guard animal on site. Although they are an excellent deterrent for criminal types passing through your neighborhood, a professional thief determined to break into your home will scope out the situation and employ tactics to handle the animal. It can be as easy as befriending the dog over a period of time unbeknownst to you or shooting it with a tranquilizer that knocks it out long enough for them to rob you.

It is a commitment of time to have a guard animal and if you are prepared for this, watch dog is an excellent supplement to an electronic home security system that alerts the authorities when you have a problem. The fact is that when you are in jeopardy and under threat of harm, you will need to call the authorities anyway. A dog obviously can’t make that call, but an electronic alarm system is designed to transmit the call immediately.
