The answer to this question really depends on the type of dog you have. Keep in mind, however, that you don’t necessarily have to own an attack dog in order to deter burglars. What you need is a dog that likes to bark a lot; particularly one that barks at pretty much every little noise that seems out of the ordinary to it.
Finding a Guard Dog
If you don’t currently own a dog, but you want to purchase one as added protection in your home, you should take the time to do some online research so that you can find out which types of dogs are generally considered best for “guarding”. It isn’t always the large dogs that are the best guard dogs. Sometimes, smaller dogs can be a good enough deterrent to keep potential burglars out of your home, particularly if the dog carries an intimidating bark.
Most security professionals do not recommend, however, that you rely on a dog to protect your home from burglars. There are always going to be burglars who are so intent on getting into your home that they will be willing to risk being bitten in order to get to your possessions. Some burglars simply are not afraid of dogs, so do not count on your pet keeping strangers out of your home.
When Having a Dog isn’t an Option
Some people cannot have dogs because of allergies or because they have small children. Even if you don’t want a dog or can’t have one, you can always get creative and find other ways to make it seem like you have a dog living in the house. For example, did you know that you can purchase doorbell chimes that are a recording of barking dogs? If you can stand listening to that every time someone rings your doorbell, it might go a long way towards deterring would-be thieves.
If you have a dog that is generally afraid of people and doesn’t really ever bark at them, then you cannot count on that animal to provide any level of protection to keep your home from being broken into. If you own this type of pet, you will definitely need to take other measures to ensure that your home is secure.
Having a security system installed is probably the best thing you can do to keep your home safe, but these are not within everyone’s budget. If a security system is a little beyond your means right now, consider taking some other steps to enhance the security of your home. Place automatic timers on two or three of your lamps and set them to come on at regular intervals every night, particularly when you are not going to be at home. Burglars tend to stay away from well-lit homes because they assume that they are occupied.
Even if you are the type of person who likes to have natural sunlight coming into your house, try to resist that urge. Having opened blinds and curtains gives potential burglars a good look inside your home, and this allows them to determine whether you have anything that they might be interested in. The best rule of thumb is to keep all lower level curtains and blinds closed, even during the day. This way, no one can get an idea of what kinds of valuables you own and they won’t be as tempted to break in.
