Many people consider investment in a security animal, like a guard dog, to be a very wise investment indeed. Most of the time, those people are correct. But that is not always the case, and before you go and get a home security dog, you need to consider whether or not the dog is wise, safe, and in the best interests of your family.
The benefits of a home security dog are obvious. First, there’s the psychological benefit. Many people find large dogs intimidating. Even the sweetest dog in the world can be terrifying if that dog is a Doberman or a Pit Bull. Would be criminals could get one look at your intimidating animal and run away. Second, home security dogs act as an alert.
The second somebody tries to breach your home perimeter, the dog will erupt in barks and growls, warning you that somebody is nearby. This only works, however, if the dog is well trained. If your dog barks at everything from intruders to butterflies, than they are not a very good warning system. Third, if the intruder braves the intimidating dog and doesn’t mind being barked at, a home security dog can be trained where and when to attack, thus debilitating the intruder.
But there might be some practical downsides to owning a dog for the purposes of home security. First, dogs are not just burglar alarms. They have needs that their owners must be able to meet, including daily exercise, training, the proper amount of living space, and possibly expensive food bills. Second, good guard dogs are not cheap. They are very much an investment.
